Device and Application Policy Enforcement for Novell eDirectory

Enterprises today are constantly challenged with security and support issues arising from one major area - endpoint users and their PCs. Malware, data leakage caused by removable media and spyware, and resulting regulatory compliance (information privacy) issues dominate enterprise IT's "top 10 concerns" lists from a variety of analyst firms.

Today's existing security solutions have been unable to stem the tide of ever-increasing security threat, primarily because enterprise endpoints are porous and becoming more so as new hardware technologies and P2P applications appear on the market. Who would have ever considered an iPod to pose a security risk a few years ago and who would have expected the wave of boutique spyware explicitly crafted to target individual organizations?

Traditional security solutions are not designed to address today's risks simply because they rely on signatures or some other means to react to symptoms after a threat has already appeared. Lumension® Endpoint Suite provides the two critical components enterprises need to solve problems associated with endpoint executables and devices and works in a simple, unique way that puts control back in the hands of IT administrators while giving end users the flexibility that they demand.

When combined with Novell ZENworks, Lumension® Endpoint Security helps customers to ensure compliance with privacy regulations, enforce and audit application and device usage policies and improve security at the network's most risk-prone point - the desktop. Under the agreement, Novell resells Lumension;® Endpoint Security globally alongside Novell ZENworks. Read the press release here.

Lumension;® Endpoint Security provides policy-based control for all devices and applications that can be used on enterprise endpoints. Using an automated whitelist approach, Lumension;® Endpoint Security enables the development, enforcement, and auditing for application and device use in order to maintain IT security, reduce the effort and cost associated with supporting endpoint technologies, and ensure compliance with regulations. By using a whitelist approach, enterprises can literally turn their backs on the volumes of unwanted applications, malware, and unauthorized devices and instead focus on what is authorized and approved.

Lumension;® Endpoint Security links application and device policies to eDirectory-based user and user group information, dramatically simplifying the management of endpoint application and device resources.

Lumension® Device Control

Lumension® Device Control is Lumension's Device Control module that extends the control of I/O devices policies. Based on a positive model, device access for users is prohibited by default. Only explicitly authorized devices can be accessed. Lumension® Device Control manages access to devices by applying an Access Control List (ACL) to each device type. To grant access, the Administrator only needs to associate Novell objects (organizational units, users, user groups) with the devices and/or device classes to which they should have access.

Lumension® Application Control

Lumension® Application Control is Lumension's Application Execution Management module that provides organizations with the capability of exercising total control over the execution of all applications on networks. Lumension® Application Control works on the basis that the use of all executables is denied unless authorized. Unlike a Black List approach which can only prevent known malware from executing, a Positive Model listing all authorized executables affords protection against all unknown executable-based viruses, Trojans, worms, spyware, system monitors and prevents the use of unwanted (illegal or unlicensed) software.

eDirectory Support

Lumension's Novell Support enables enterprises that are utilizing Novell Directory Services to take advantage of the identities stored within eDirectory. This information can be used by Lumension;® Endpoint Security to configure device and application use policies.

Lumension;® Endpoint Security 3 tier architecture and eDirectory integration.

Novell customers can manage with the Lumension;® Endpoint Security Management Console (SMC) with the same ease of use as AD-oriented enterprises have come to expect from Lumension®. Using dedicated integration tools, you may import one or multiple trees depending on parameters used.
